About the british retriever trophy

A best-in-class, UK-based gun dog competition dedicated exclusively to elite retriever gundogs.

Launching June 2027the Trophy represents a new standard within gundog working tests, combining traditional principles with a refined, high-level competitive structure. It has been designed not only as a landmark event in its own right, but as the foundation for future growth and development within the sport.

Our Vision

Elevating Working Tests for Gundogs

At its core, The British Retriever Trophy aims to elevate the status and perception of working tests for gundogs, particularly at the Open level.

While gundog working tests are widely recognised and respected within the community, there has long been an opportunity to create a single, elite competition that:

  • Showcases the very best retriever gun dog talent
  • Rewards excellence in a structured, high-profile environment
  • Provides a clear pathway from Open-level success to national recognition

The Trophy has been created to meet that need, bringing together the UK’s top-performing retrievers in a competition that reflects both tradition and ambition.

A New Standard in Gun Dog Competition

The 2027 Trophy will operate as an invitation-only Open Working Test, with qualification achieved through winning recognised AV Open stakes across the UK.

This ensures that:

  • Every competitor has proven ability at the highest level of gundog working tests.
  • The standard of competition remains consistently elite.
  • The event represents a true benchmark for performance in working tests for gundogs.

Unlike team-based formats, the Trophy is focused entirely on individual dogs and their handlers, placing the emphasis firmly on partnership, precision, and consistency.

A Dummy-Based, Ethical Approach

The British Retriever Trophy is conducted exclusively as a dummy-based competition.

  • No live game is used at any stage.
  • No game is harmed during the event.
  • All retrievals are carried out using training dummies.

This aligns the competition with the established format of gundog working tests, while also making it more accessible to a broader audience. It allows spectators to appreciate the skill, discipline, and control of the retriever gun dog in a fully ethical and controlled environment.

Open to the Best Gundogs & Handlers

While firmly rooted in the UK, the British Retriever Trophy has been designed with an international outlook.

Qualification is primarily achieved through UK-based gundog working tests, but a limited number of Wild Card entries will be awarded to invite exceptional retrievers from outside the UK.

This approach ensures that the competition:

  • Maintains a strong domestic foundation
  • Encourages international participation
  • Continues to raise standards within the global gun dog competition community

A Foundation for the Futurethe 2027 event represents the first step in a broader vision. The British Retriever Trophy 2027 will lay the groundwork for future expansion.

Our intention is to grow the scale, reach, and impact of The British Retriever Trophy in the years that follow. With a clear structure, elite qualification standards, and a commitment to excellence, the Trophy is positioned to become a defining event in the gun dog competition calendar.
